Student helps others suffering from seizures

Junior Margo Jones is making a big impact and is helping people everyday who struggle with epilepsy, a disorder she suffers from herself. When Margo was just an infant her parents had noticed that her eyes would flutter frequently. The Jones’ did not think anything of it until eight year old Margo suffered from her first seizure. From there she went through a long process of being properly diagnosed. Originally thought to be a certain type of turrets, Jones was finally correctly diagnosed her freshman year by neurologist Dr. Abdlmoity. Margo has a certain type of epilepsy called Eyelid Myoclonic Epilepsy.

In sixth grade Margo decided to take initiative. Instead of suffering with her disorder she decided to make the best of it and use her platform to reach out to people everywhere. Margo created a foundation called Margo’s Footprint. Her main goals are to educate and fundraise to hopefully find a cure. Margo participates in public speaking about her disorder which includes information about her personal story and what someone should do if they are present when someone is having a seizure. She is currently working on organizing a color run or wine tasting event for adults. Something Margo wishes people understood about epilepsy is that “you can look at people and not tell that they have it”.  A common misconception is that people with epilepsy have a slow brain but according to Margo it is actually the opposite. “A person’s brain with epilepsy moves so fast that the wires get jumbled. You can think of the brain as a computer, it freezes for a minute and then reboots.”. If you would like to helps Margo’s Footprint you can visit the website at www.margosfootprint.com. There you can purchase notecards and t-shirts that will donate the funds to the National Epilepsy Foundation.
