Thoughts on Youtube Vlogs

Every month there are over six billion viewers that watch YouTube. The large majority are young people that range from age 13 to 17. What exactly do people watch on YouTube? Lately children have been watching YouTube vlogs that can last up to hours while others are much shorter, lasting only ten minutes.

“I love watching YouTube vlogs because you can see what famous people do on a daily basis, and I think it’s better than Netflix because they are real people, not trying to act, and vloggers do new things every day,” Lakewood Middle School student Leila Garcia said.

Many children are inspired from vloggers on YouTube because they can be themselves and also show their fans how they live their lives. Not all vloggers only record themselves shopping, eating or hanging out with their friends, but they can show their viewers how to do things. There are a lot of components that can fit in just one vlog.

“When I watch YouTube vlogs, I mainly focus on the ones of YouTubers playing video games because I can see their skills and how they do things,” Lakewood Elementary School student Cade Carter said.

While many children love watching YouTube vlogs there are a large amount of people that do not understand the purpose of watching them.

“Honestly, I don’t get the point of watching vlogs,” junior Maria Masroua said. “Why would you want to watch the life of a random stranger? I would much rather watch TV or Netflix.”

Adults really have no idea of the impact that YouTube vlogs can have on students. One study concludes that 75 percent of children say that they would consider a career in online videos. The days are gone when children dreamed of becoming doctors or lawyers.
