Hoops for Hope Helping Children with Cancer

While most kids are going to school and laying with their friends, many are staying in hospitals and undergoing tremendous pain and treatment. Hoops for Hopes is striving to cure childhood cancer by donating money to research and helping to support families in need. A few of West’s students noticed the difference this organization was making and began a chapter at West.

Hoops for Hope is a local organization supporting children cancer. It originated at Blue Valley Southwest in a partnership with Children’s Mercy Hospital and Clinics. Hospital staff, administrators, families and students work together to create promo videos to fund the fight against childhood cancer. The money raised through Hoops for HopesĀ events contribute to cancer research and to families struggling to afford their child’s treatment and care.

The Hoops for Hope national website describes their event as “…a student driven charity basketball event that offers a social and fun-spirited atmosphere… and collects a meaningful financial donation for Children’s Mercy cancer (oncology) clinics.”

This event occurs at Blue Valley Southwest, Blue Valley High School, Kansas State University, and now Blue Valley West. Students create teams of four or more members, pay an entrance fee and fundraise money for the event. They then participate in a tournament of four-on-four basketball. The winners of the most spirit, the winning tam, the highest fundraisers and others will get prizes throughout the tournament.

2015 provides a new expansion opportunity for Hoops for Hope through a partnership with The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Hoops for Hope strives to expand to high schools and universities around the country.

West’s Hoops for Hope is on November 10-12. To register a team or find out information, visit their website at www.bvwh4h.weebly.com, or see their Twitter @bvwhoopsforhope.
