Student journalists competed in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association regional competition on Friday, Feb. 27 at the University of Kansas (KU) in Lawrence, Kan. This week, state qualifiers were announced. The State competition will be held on Saturday, May 2 at KU.

Sophomore Gabrielle Kohnle and junior Carly McDonald placed first in their categories, yearbook sports writing and advertising, respectively. Sophomore Ryan Barrett received second place for his sports photography entry. Senior Dan Kurtz earned second place for his newspaper sports writing story, along with sophomore Leah Zimmerli for her features writing in the newspaper category. Senior Logan Cole earned third place for her headline writing and design entry.

Junior Divya Jain received first place honorable mention and senior Alisha Forsythe received second place honorable mention for their academic photography entries. Senior Erin Walker earned second place honorable mention for her caption writing and junior Quinn Coleman received second place honorable mention for her editorial writing piece. Senior Ashley Oades and sophomore Maddy C. Lewis earned third place honorable mention in their categories, student life photography and infographic design, respectively.
