Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a nontoxic natural compound found in a cannabis flower.

According to Ministry of Hemp, the chemical compound of CBD was first discovered in 1940. In 2014, CBD products became legal in many states and in England which helped propel increased legalization. Kansas passed a law in 2018 to legalize CBD products. There are three stores within eight miles of BV West that specialize in CBD products.

Contrary to popular belief, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol, THC, CBD has no properties to make someone high. CBD’s new popularity is a result of people taking advantage of its positive effects.

CBD comes in  many forms; creams, gels, isolates, capsules, vapors, sprays and most commonly, oil. With CBD sales expected to top $1 billion by 2020, stores are opening in unexpected markets. Hemp Life Overland Park opened on Feb. 4, 2019. Store owner Lisa Kaczmarek, as well as some of family members, use CBD to help with an assortment of symptoms.

“My son made me aware about four years ago,” Kaczmarek said. “I was opposed as I thought it was related to weed. I finally tried it but made the number one mistake and only used it for two to three days and quit thinking it was not helping. I was trying to treat chronic pain. I educated myself and started using CBD again about a year ago.”

She started to use CBD products due to chronic pain in her joints and back and her  son started to use it to alleviate his anxiety.

Kaczmarek uses tincture, a concentrated  liquid, daily and pain cream on her joints. The store sells many different products that range from human to even dog use.

“We sell tincture, creams, lotions, vape, gummies, hard candies, bath bombs and more,” Kaczmarek said.  “We also sell Kratom and Kava. We also have an entire line for pets. They suffer from pain and anxiety just like we do.”

Kratom leaves are dried and primarily crushed up and put into drinks for a stimulant. Lower doses of Kratom are used to make people more energetic and talkative. Higher doses help with pain relief and reducing stress. Kava is similar to Kratom in the sense that it can also be used in a drink and has similar effects. Kava is used for both mental and physical relaxation.

The biggest misconception about CBD is that it makes them automatically think of marijauna and the intoxicating effects of THC. There is an assumption that because CBD is related to marijuana that it will will cause people to fail drug tests. However, this is not true.

CBD comes from the hemp plant which does not contain THC like the marijuana plant does. The CBD is extracted and then put into a variety of products.

Kaczmarek opened her store because she believes in the benefits of CBD for any number of health problems.

“It helps with pain, reduces  inflammation, it helps with anxiety and depression,” Kaczmarek said.  “Helps with sleep and energy levels, epileptic seizures [and] much more.”

As CBD becomes more popular, people are discovering and taking advantage of the health benefits.
