Jags lose a close final game to earn second place in 6A

The Olathe West Owls beat the Jaguars 2-1 in the Class 6A state championship game at Topeka’s Hummer Sports Park on an unseasonably warm Nov. 9.
Although the Jags had the advantage of a full student section, they scored no goals in the first half. The Owls scored two goals at the beginning of the second half and held the Jags scoreless until BV West added a late penalty kick.
Team members appeared to lack energy in the Championship. Wichita East took the Jags to four overtimes in the Nov. 8 semi-final game. The Jags came out on top with a 3-2 win with a penalty kick by senior Andrew Parry and save by junior Colin Welsh. The close game kept the Jags from getting home until after midnight.
The Jags ended the season 15-5-1 and the Owls 20-1-0. Their only loss was to the Jags on Sept. 7. That game went into overtime with the BV West taking the 3-2 victory. Their appearance in the title game was the second in three years. The Owls win was the first team State championship for Olathe West.
