A new royal baby is welcomed into the world

British Royalty has gained a new family member. On Monday, April 23, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, gave birth to her third child, a baby boy.

Just several hours after the new prince’s birth, his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge presented him to the public outside the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital.

Although this is the third royal baby of Prince William and Kate Middleton, this birth is historical. The rules that determine who is next in line to the throne were altered in 2013. Previously, male siblings have pushed ahead of their sisters in the line to the throne regardless of the order of birth. However, the new prince’s birth finally puts these changes into effect as it is the first time that an older female sibling-Princess Charlotte, in this instance- will not get pushed back in the line of ascension to the throne due to the birth of a younger brother. Currently, the line to the throne stands with Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth II’s oldest son, to be first in line, followed by the new baby’s father, Prince William, and then his siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte respectively. Due to the changes made in 2013, Charlotte will remain fourth in line to the throne. However, Prince Harry- Prince William’s brother and the newborn’s uncle- will be bumped back to be sixth in line as the new baby takes the fifth place position.

Although the royal baby has been anticipated since news of Kate Middleton’s pregnancy, his name is still a secret. Limited information about the baby has been released. Nevertheless, the royal birth has stirred up excitement.
