Homework: How to Do it Effectively
February 13, 2017
As the second semester gets rolling, tests are becoming more frequent, and homework is being assigned even more often. It’s going to be a long haul to spring break in mid-March, so here are some helpful study tips to make the most of your time.
- Take frequent breaks: If you can afford to, take a break every 30-40 minutes from studying and/or homework. Research shows that regular breaks will ensure your work will be at top notch quality compared to someone who grinds out multiple hours of homework at a time.
- Set a goal: Before you sit down and begin to work, tell yourself what you plan to accomplish. Tell yourself you will complete the homework for chemistry and English, then do it.
- Avoid distractions: Especially from your phone, be sure to limit the amount of distractions around you as much as possible while you work. It can be tempting to make sure none of your Snapchat streaks are about to be lost, but avoid the temptation. Shut down your phone until you give yourself a break.
- Create a study group: Find a group of people you share a class with and work outside of school together. It is much easier to figure things out in a group compared to individually.
- Avoid procrastination: It can seem easy to put off an assignment until the night before it is due, until you are doing that assignment at midnight on the due date. Especially for larger projects, spread out the work according to the deadline.
