Movie Review: A Bad Moms Christmas

Perfect Christmases are put to the test in this raunchy comedy

A Bad Moms Christmas, which is a sequel to the original Bad Moms movie, follows three sets of mothers dealing with the trials and tribulations of planning a perfect Christmas for their family. Their patience and sanity is put to the test when their moms come into town.

Amy, played by Mila Kunis, is trying to create a relaxing holidays for her two kids, since it is the first Christmas that her kids will be spending without their father. When Amy’s mother, played by Christine Baranski, comes to town, a war is started between Amy’s relaxing Christmas plans and her mother’s over the top plans which feature a 180 people Christmas Eve Party and attending the five hour, Russian version of The Nutcracker.

Kiki, played by Kristen Bell, is put to the test when her overbearing mother, played by Cheryl Hines, shows up to their home three days earlier wearing a sweatshirt made of Kiki’s face. Whenever Kiki tries to talk to her recently-widowed mom about their smothering relationship, her mom avoids the topic entirely and even goes as far as buying the house next door to Kiki’s.

Carla, played by Katheryn Hahn, is an egregiously lewd single mother of a teenage boy. Carla’s mom shows up every few years to ask for money which she inevitably wastes on gambling. Carla always gives in to her mother’s request for money because she is searching for her mother’s approval and affection.

It would be dishonest to say that this film is good. It resorts to filthy jokes to get cheap laughs, filler scenes that add no substance to the plot, and ridiculous family dynamics. The characters, while realistic, are not complex and their actions are almost as predictable as the ending of the movie. However, underneath all the cheesy jokes is a sweet, joyous message- Christmas, regardless of the form it takes, is a time when imperfect families can share their love for one another.

It may fail to become a Christmas movie classic, but A Bad Moms Christmas is the perfect film for anyone looking to laugh or have a good time.
