Greatest Showman

The story behind America’s first circus

Greatest Showman

After its release, the film, The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman has seen great success. Many have flocked to the theaters to experience the music and magic accompanying the life of P.T Barnum. Apart from some theatrical additions, the movie remains somewhat true to the story of the first circus. Unfortunately, there are some part that the makers of the film left out; and for good reason.

With a rating of PG, The Greatest Showman could not get too intense as it dives into P.T Barnum’s life. Naturally, the director created a storybook plot, with minor disturbances that failed to deter our ambitious and admirable protagonist. Yet, Barnum had demons that the movie hides.

While the circus saw great success, Barnum still faced scandals in his lifetime, most notably the poor treatment of the animals inside the show. The elephant, Jumbo was recorded to have been severely mistreated during the duration of the production. On some account, Barnum was recorded to mistreat the performers of the circus claiming he was caught up in the profit of their uniqueness. The movie does elude to the greed and crudity Barnum displayed as popularity grew but never to the extent at which history remembers.

In addition to the rumors surrounding the mistreatment, many also criticized the fraudity of Barnum’s production.

To some, however, Barnum still represent the ingenuity and grandeur of American spirit. In simply exaggerating characteristic to appeal to audience, he was making them enjoy themselves. Most notably he said “There’s a sucker born every minute.” Ironically, his audience were ‘suckers’.

Regardless of the truth behind the story, the movie itself was enchanting. For those who enjoy musical numbers filled with memorable tunes and purposeful lyrics, this show is it. Hugh Jackman demonstrates the energetic and inspiring P.T Barnum and his start from humble beginnings. After much financial struggle, the innovator begins a show of misfits. Eventually, this transforms into a popular performance and the name “circus” is coined.

Deep down, the message of embracing differences and unique characteristics is moving. It is a lesson many are familiar with yet never tire of hearing due to its withstanding importance. The Greatest Showman exemplifies individuality and demonstrates an inspiring message through entertaining dialogue and setting.
