YouTube Generation

Growing up, YouTube has not always been my number one source of entertainment, as it was created in 2005. When I was in elementary and middle school I mostly watched T.V. and occasionally played video games on my Gameboy and D.S.. As the internet started to become a bigger platform for people to express themselves, YouTube became a great place for individuals to make fun skits and videos for their audience. Personally, I enjoy watching videos no longer than 5 minutes, most of them being pranks, motivational speakers and a variety of other things. Nowadays though, YouTube has become more and more of a business where if you are successful enough you can make a living off of it, which is pretty remarkable.

YouTube has recently created a YouTube Red option that viewers can purchase to watch T.V. episodes and content for a monthly charge. I do not have that much of an attention span but there were a few times I have watched a twenty minute YouTube video before. However, the younger generations frequently watch lengthy YouTube videos. At first, I thought this was very strange that someone can sit down and watch a twenty minute video without wanting to watch something else but it turns out many other kids are watching YouTube just like how I would watch a T.V. episode. This is somewhat surprising, but it actually makes sense if you think about it. Since YouTube has these lengthy videos available that are targeted toward younger kids. People are more compelled to watch those instead of other shows on T.V.. With T.V., kids are limited to the cartoons they can watch and the movies they own, but with YouTube, anyone can find a 20 minute video dedicated to how cats sleep or putting on makeup on a dog that you could never find on T.V.

This whole dilemma is interesting because it seems that the Internet, through computers and smartphones, can stream T.V. shows and other content not available on T.V. through YouTube. For my generation, I do not think our  generation will quite get into the watching long episodes and streaming videos on YouTube but for the younger generations, it may become the norm. It may become kind of like Netflix, how everyone nowadays gets their movies through Netflix rather than leaving the house to get a movie. I think YouTube will just add more entertainment to our already lively internet, making it normal to watch full-on original content on YouTube just like how Netflix has original shows and movies.
